Reflections on the 2024 Presidential Election: A Pivotal Moment in American History

The 2024 U.S. presidential election will go down in history as one of the most consequential in modern American politics. With record-breaking voter turnout, significant demographic shifts, and numerous historic firsts, this election offers a glimpse into the evolving landscape of our nation. Today, we’re diving into the results and reflecting on what they mean for the future of American politics, policy, and society.

Historic Firsts and Record Voter Turnout

In 2024, over 82 million Americans voted early—an unprecedented level of participation that showcases how deeply engaged the American electorate is with the issues at stake. This election was not just about the candidates, but also about the transformative policies and demographic changes that are reshaping the country's political landscape.

One of the most notable outcomes is the rise of historic firsts across the ballot. While Kamala Harris could have become the first female president of the United States, this would not have been the first time a woman has led a country. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia was Africa's first elected female president, serving from 2006 to 2018. Globally, women have broken barriers for decades, including Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Sri Lanka’s first female prime minister in 1960, and Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, who took office in 2024.

The 2024 Election Results: A Pivotal Moment in U.S. History

Donald Trump emerged as the projected winner of the 2024 presidential race, making history in several ways. First, he became the first convicted felon to win the presidency, following a contentious legal battle that sparked national debate. His running mate, JD Vance, is set to make history as the first millennial vice president-elect, a new generational shift in the political landscape.

Trump’s victory was especially significant because he also became the second president in history to win the election in split terms. The only other president to do so was Grover Cleveland, who served two non-consecutive terms between 1885-1889 and again from 1893-1897. Interestingly, both Cleveland and Trump have ties to New Jersey—Trump owns a golf course there, while Cleveland was born in Caldwell and is buried in Princeton.

Key Figures and Groundbreaking Elections

The 2024 election was marked by a number of groundbreaking achievements for underrepresented groups. For the first time, Lisa Blount Rochester became the first woman to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate, and Angela Alsobrooks made history as the first African American woman to represent Maryland in the Senate.

Other historic wins include Sarah McBride, who became the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress, and Andy Kim, who became the first Korean American to serve in the Senate as a Democratic representative from New Jersey’s 3rd district. Hilda Momanyi Hiltsley, a Kenyan-American, was elected to represent District 38A in the Minnesota House of Representatives, making her the first Kenyan-born American to serve in the state legislature.

Key Policies on the Ballot

The 2024 election wasn’t just about who won the presidency—it also included a series of important policy measures that will impact Americans in the years to come. States voted on critical issues such as:

- Reproductive Rights: Some states expanded or protected reproductive rights, while others implemented restrictions.

- Minimum Wage: Several states passed measures to raise the minimum wage, signaling a growing trend toward fair wages across the country.

- Marijuana Legalization: A number of states decided on the future of marijuana legalization, reflecting shifting attitudes toward cannabis.

- Education: From funding for schools to curriculum changes, education policies were also on the ballot in key states.

- Voting Rights: Measures on voter ID laws, mail-in voting, and early voting options showed a continued push for changes to election procedures in several states.

For example, Missouri passed both measures to protect reproductive rights and raise the minimum wage, signaling significant policy shifts at the state level that will have lasting impacts on local communities.

A Changing American Electorate

Demographic shifts were a crucial factor in the 2024 election. The rising influence of young voters, Black and Latino communities, and suburban areas contributed to a more diverse electorate. This trend points to a broader national shift in political priorities and values. The growing diversity within the electorate will continue to shape the direction of U.S. politics for years to come.

In addition to these demographic shifts, many states passed transformative measures on voting rights and election integrity, reflecting a growing concern over the accessibility and fairness of U.S. elections. These changes may set the stage for more inclusive and transparent voting processes in the future.

A Look Ahead: The Future of American Politics

As we reflect on the 2024 presidential election, it’s clear that this election is a watershed moment in American history. The results highlight the increasing diversity of the electorate and the shifting political landscape. From record-breaking voter turnout to historic firsts in both the White House and Congress, the 2024 election has demonstrated the power of the American people to shape their future.

The impact of this election will be felt in the years to come, especially with the policy changes that were enacted in states across the country. As we move forward, the changing priorities of Americans—reflected in issues like reproductive rights, minimum wage, and education funding—will continue to influence the direction of both state and national politics.
